cleaning(adult/child prophylaxis) is a term used for a procedure performed on patients with healthy gum tissue or with different degrees of gingival inflammation(gingivitis). It is defined as “removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the tooth structures” and is intended to help the patient maintain a healthy mouth. Usually the teeth are scaled (remove hard deposits), polished (brush the teeth) to remove soft plaque and stains. But there are different kinds of “dental cleaning” as per popular concept.
Very often when caries is not detected in time, it advances deeper inside the tooth and affects an inner tissue located in its core, called the pulp, which functions supplying blood and nerve sensation to the tooth. It causes pain and in many instances a root canal is needed in order of stopping the pain. A root canal can be performed in one appointment or may require several visits to the dental office depending on whether or not there is an infection, which might require antibiotic therapy prior to finishing the root canal.
Nowadays people are trying to improve the way their smiles look. Either it is because of food and drink staining, use of tobacco and medications, trauma or just natural coloration, teeth can be withened and stains removed so that they look brighter. There are different methods employed for teeth whitening which can be performed at home or in office, depending on the readiness of the patient for having his/her teeth more white.
Caries appears in a tooth once the enamel demineralizes enough to weaken its structure. If the carious tissue is not stopped, it can affect and infect the pulp, leading ultimately to the need for a root canal treatment. Once the caries is removed that empty space needs to be filled up with composite resins which have been developed in order of providing the look and the physical properties of the natural teeth.
It is no secret that most people are afraid of the dentist. A bad experience during childhood, the sound of the dental handpieces, or just the sole presence of a dentist in a white coat are some of the reasons people express as cause of their fear. One or another are enough to prevent a person from going to his/her dental appointment, elicit a fear response while at the dental office, and some times provoke a reaction to local anesthetics.
